How does "no upload" actually work?

The page ships a WebAssembly-based compression engine (mozjpeg / OxiPNG / WebP encoder). The whole process runs in your browser’s memory and image data is never sent anywhere. You can literally disconnect from the network while compressing.

What is the difference between local and cloud mode?

Output quality and size savings are essentially the same. The difference is capability: local mode outputs JPG, PNG and WebP (PNG is losslessly optimized), with no AVIF for now; animated GIFs and HEIC photos need cloud mode because of browser decoding limits.

Does local compression use a lot of memory or battery?

Compression is CPU work; a single photo usually finishes in 1-3 seconds, similar to cloud mode in feel. Memory usage grows with queue size during batch jobs — keep it under about 20 images at a time. Memory is released when processing finishes.

Is EXIF metadata kept?

No. Local mode re-encodes through a browser canvas, which wipes all EXIF (capture time, device, GPS) — exactly what you want for privacy. To keep EXIF, switch back to cloud mode and enable "Keep EXIF".

Which browsers support local compression?

All modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 15+) support WebAssembly and can use local compression. The first activation downloads about 0.3 MB of engine files, which are then cached for instant reuse.

About local, no-upload compression

Traditional online compressors need you to upload images to a server. Local mode brings the whole compression engine into your browser instead: mozjpeg for JPEG, OxiPNG for lossless PNG optimization, and the official WebP encoder — all running as WebAssembly on your machine. Images are read from your disk into memory, compressed, and written back; the network only ever loads the page itself.

Local mode supports the full core feature set — quality slider, resizing and exact target size (KB) — with a live size estimate before you compress. Its limits are clear too: no AVIF output yet, and animated GIFs or HEIC photos still need cloud mode; just flip the local switch off for those. Local processing leaves no server-side record whatsoever, and EXIF metadata is wiped during re-encoding.
