About PNG Compression
PNG is a lossless format, at the cost of large files — a raw screenshot often weighs several MB. This page uses palette quantization (the libimagequant engine, same family as pngquant): millions of colors are merged into an optimal 256-color palette, then dithering smooths the gradients. Files typically shrink by more than half with virtually no visible difference.
The compressed PNG keeps its alpha channel, so icons, logos, and stickers are safe to process. For photos, PNG is the wrong vehicle — switch to JPEG or WebP for much smaller files.
