The circular avatar has become the universal language of social platforms — most of them display avatars as circles by default. Upload a plain square photo and the platform crops it for you: corner content gets cut, and where the crop lands is out of your control. Previewing and cropping to a circle in advance is what-you-see-is-what-you-get.
Rounded squares fit brand accounts and app icons better: more of the picture survives, with softer edges than a hard square. The iOS-style squircle (continuous-curvature corner) is the most refined of all — no sudden transition between curve and edge, visually smoother, which is exactly why it became the standard app-icon shape.
Exporting a transparent-background PNG is key: the area outside the corners stays clear and blends naturally onto any background. If the result comes out large, one pass through the compressor typically halves it again.
